5 dead, 66 migrants rescued from waters near Puerto Rico
Castrodad explained claimed 41 men and 25 women of all ages survived, together with two young children. The age and nationality of people who died and had been rescued have been not promptly recognized.
Jeffrey Quiñones, spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, did not promptly return a information for remark.
The boat carrying the migrants fled the scene, and it was unclear how a lot of people were on board at that time, Castrodad mentioned.
The incident is the most recent in a string of fatal voyages throughout the northern Caribbean carrying typically Haitian migrants fleeing their country amid a spike in gang-similar killings and kidnappings.
On Sunday, authorities in the Bahamas recovered the bodies of 17 migrants and rescued 25 other people immediately after their boat capsized. A legal investigation is ongoing.
In the meantime, in May, 11 Haitian girls drowned and 38 other people ended up saved immediately after their boat sank near Puerto Rico.
“This is happening every working day,” Castrodad explained. “Everyone runs the exact chance and exact threat.”
